The first edition of our highly anticipated Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Report has launched!

The report extensively covers the work done at the Katingan Mentaya project and documents its achievements in aligning with all 17 of the UN SDGs. This comprehensive and insightful document represents the culmination of countless hours of research, collaboration, and dedication by our team and partners on the Katingan Mentaya Project.

The Katingan Mentaya Project is living proof that carbon finance can combat climate change. The largest program of its kind, it generates an average 7.5 million triple gold certified carbon credits annually; equivalent to taking 2,000,000 cars off the road each year. In partnership with local communities, we utilise carbon revenues to ensure natural forest restoration and protection, through activities aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The project protects vital peatland habitats in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia for five Critically Endangered, eight Endangered and 31 Vulnerable species. The protected area is home to between 5 and 10% of the global populations of the Bornean Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey and Southern Bornean Gibbon.

What We Focus On

Climate

Peat swamp forest is incredibly carbon-rich. By directly preventing the conversion of natural forest to plantations, we avoid the emissions of nearly half a billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, whilst enabling the forest to continue providing vital environmental services. Through avoided deforestation and forest degradation we deliver verified GHG emission reductions.

Community

Local communities are active participants in the project: as decision makers, employees, and through a broad range of sustainable development initiatives. Through fostering a collaborative culture of sustainable innovation, we increasingly buffer the forest from outside threats, and affect transformative change that addresses poverty in all of its dimensions.

Biodiversity

Katingan Mentaya is a biodiversity hotspot, including some of the world’s most endangered species. As threats deplete their habitat elsewhere, Katingan Mentaya helps secure the continued existence of Critically Endangered species, such as the Bornean orangutan, of which an estimated 5 to 10% of the global population remain within the project area.

Acting locally, thinking globally

Preventing the clearing, drainage and burning of carbon rich peatlands, preserves vital habitat and reduces smoke exposure locally, and is a crucial step towards achieving the Paris Climate Agreement targets of limiting global temperature rises below 2 degrees Celcius this century.
